A quirky insurance policy purchased on the back of youthful romance has finally yielded a handsome return. A young woman from China, who spent just $28 USD (approximately BDT 3,400) on a so-called “love insurance” policy during her secondary school years, recently received $1,400 USD (around BDT 172,000) after tying the knot.
According to reports by NDTV and the South China Morning Post, the woman, known only by her surname Wu, resides in Xi’an, Shaanxi Province. In 2016, as a schoolgirl, she purchased the unconventional policy as a gift for her then-boyfriend, Wang. At the time, Wang was sceptical and feared that Wu might have fallen victim to a scam.
The policy had been introduced by China Life Property & Casualty Insurance Co. Ltd., a local insurer that briefly experimented with these “love insurance” plans. The scheme promised that if a couple married within a certain period, they would be entitled to either 10,000 yuan (approximately $1,400 USD) or 10,000 roses as a gift from the insurer.
Wu and Wang’s relationship began during their secondary school years, and after nearly a decade of courtship, they officially married in October 2025. Following their wedding registration, the couple submitted a claim to the insurance company.
Given the logistical challenge of storing 10,000 roses, the couple opted to receive the cash equivalent. The insurer has requested the necessary documentation, which the couple has already begun preparing.
Reflecting on the experience, Wu stated that receiving the payout after completing their wedding formalities and honeymoon added extra joy to their new life together. Although China Life discontinued the “love insurance” policy in 2017, all policies purchased prior to the closure remain valid and enforceable.
This heartwarming story illustrates how a small, whimsical gesture rooted in young love can, over time, turn into a tangible reward—a rare intersection of romance and financial planning.
