A fourth-grade student was injured in a bomb-like explosion in Kalia Upazila, Narail, on Thursday morning. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. in the Chhoto Kalia area, sending shockwaves through the local community.
The injured child, Alif Molla, is the son of a migrant worker, Rachu Molla, from Jaynagar village in Naragati Upazila. Alif is a student at Chhoto Kalia Government Primary School and resides with his family in rented accommodation nearby.
According to witnesses, the incident unfolded when a suspicious bag was left outside the residence of local resident Ranu Begum. Neighbours reportedly moved the bag into a nearby garden, intending to remove it from public view. Driven by curiosity, Alif approached the bag. Upon examining its contents, which resembled a crude explosive device, he picked it up. Feeling the object heat up, he attempted to throw it away, triggering a sudden and powerful explosion.
Alif sustained serious injuries in the blast and was initially admitted to the Kalia Upazila Health Complex. Owing to the severity of his condition, he was subsequently transferred to Khulna Medical College Hospital for advanced medical care. His mother, Sathi Begum, expressed her distress: “I hope my son recovers quickly, and that such dangerous incidents do not harm other children in the community.”
Kalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md. Idris Ali, confirmed that law enforcement authorities had visited the scene following the explosion. “Fragments of the bomb-like object were recovered and will be sent for forensic examination. Detailed information about the device and the circumstances surrounding the incident will emerge after analysis,” he stated.
Safety experts have warned that improvised explosive devices left unattended in residential areas pose a significant risk, particularly to children. The local administration has been urged to take preventive measures and raise public awareness to avert similar incidents in the future.
