In a shocking incident of school-related violence in Dhaka, a fifth-grade student was grievously injured in Kamrangirchar on Friday evening. According to police sources, the incident occurred at around 7:00 pm in Lane 7 of the East Rasulpur area, sending ripples of concern throughout the local community.
The alleged attacker has been identified as 19-year-old Saiful Islam Sagar, a local student. The victim, Roman, aged 15, had been spending time with friends in the lane when the confrontation took place. Reports indicate that the altercation stemmed from a dispute over “seniority” and Roman spending time in a different lane, which allegedly provoked Sagar. The disagreement rapidly escalated into violence, culminating in Sagar reportedly stabbing Roman.
Roman sustained multiple injuries to his abdomen, right hand, left wrist, and other parts of his body. Kamrangirchar Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Golam Faruk, stated: “Despite Roman’s attempt to protect himself by clutching his stomach with both hands, Sagar attacked him from behind with a knife.” After the assault, Sagar fled the scene.
Roman was initially taken to Kamrangirchar Health Complex by his family. However, as his condition deteriorated, he was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where surgeons successfully removed the knife from his back. On the night of 20 December, his condition worsened, prompting doctors to advise immediate admission to the Intensive Care Unit. He was subsequently moved to a private hospital in Malibagh for intensive care.
OC Faruk confirmed that Roman’s father, Jalal Fakir, filed a formal complaint with the police. Authorities immediately launched an operation and apprehended Sagar. It was revealed that Sagar is a fifth-grade student at Sunlight Kindergarten School in Kamrangirchar, and his father works as a rickshaw puller.
Officer Faruk emphasised that incidents of school-related violence are deeply troubling and serve as a warning for both educational institutions and society at large. “Parents and teachers must play an active role in instilling mutual respect and tolerance among students,” he added.
Local residents have expressed profound concern over the attack, highlighting that even minor disputes among students can escalate into serious violence. Many stressed the importance of vigilant supervision, moral guidance, and educational initiatives to prevent similar incidents in the future.
