Harry Kane has made a blistering start to the new season for both club and country, continuing his remarkable goalscoring form since joining Bayern Munich. Yet the England captain remains grounded, insisting that personal statistics alone will not earn him football’s most prestigious individual honour—the Ballon d’Or. For that, he believes major trophies are non-negotiable.
So far this season, Kane has scored 23 goals in 17 appearances for Bayern Munich, while also netting three times in four matches for England, including a decisive brace against Latvia that sealed their place in the upcoming World Cup.
Speaking at a press conference on the eve of England’s crucial World Cup qualifier against Albania, Kane was asked whether the Ballon d’Or was on his mind. His response was clear: goals alone won’t deliver the award.
“In theory, I could score 100 goals this season,” Kane said. “But if I don’t win the Champions League or the World Cup, then realistically I’m not going to win the Ballon d’Or.”
He also referenced Erling Haaland’s situation:
“It’s the same for him, and for any top footballer—you have to win the big trophies.”
England currently sit top of Group K in the European qualifiers with 21 points from seven matches, while Bayern Munich lead the Bundesliga with 28 points from 10 games. Both campaigns keep Kane firmly in the Ballon d’Or conversation—provided the results continue.
“We’re in a strong position at Bayern, and England are doing well too,” he added. “If we can maintain this rhythm until the end of the season, then discussions about the Ballon d’Or will be justified.”
