A tragic accident occurred on Sunday morning on the Dhaka–Chattogram railway line in Lalmai Upazila, Comilla, when a young man was struck and killed by a train while taking a selfie. The incident took place near the Baghmara Dudh Bazar bypass area.
The deceased, Mohi Uddin, aged 32, was a resident of West Chenghata village in Shilmuri Union, Barura Upazila. He worked as an auto-rickshaw driver and was reportedly well-known in his community.
According to eyewitnesses and local sources, Mohi Uddin drove his auto-rickshaw to Baghmara market early on Sunday morning. Around 7:30 am, he stepped onto the railway tracks to take a selfie and posted it immediately on his Facebook account. Tragically, a Dhaka-bound train approached the area shortly afterwards. Before he could move to safety, he was struck by the train and died instantly at the scene.
Speaking to reporters, Officer-in-Charge Jasim Uddin of Laksam Railway Police Station confirmed the incident. He said, “The Upakul Express, which departed from Noakhali and was headed for Dhaka, passed Laksam Railway Junction at approximately 7:30 am. It appears that the young man was struck by this train. We rushed to the scene after receiving the news, but his relatives had already taken the body home.”
Local residents expressed concern over the frequent hazards posed by pedestrians on railway tracks. They highlighted the lack of sufficient safety measures in the area, which they believe contributes to recurring accidents. Authorities have urged the public to avoid crossing or standing on railway lines, especially for photographs or social media posts.
