Senior NCP Leader Resigns Amid Internal Turmoil

The National Citizens Party (NCP) has once again witnessed a high-profile departure, signalling possible unrest within its top ranks. On Thursday, 1 January 2026, Khan Muhammad Mursalin, the party’s Central Deputy Chief Coordinator, announced his immediate resignation from all party positions and responsibilities via a Facebook statement.

Mursalin, a veteran of the party, has served in several key roles over the years, notably heading the Media, Public Relations, and Communications division. During the most recent election cycle, he acted as Secretary of the Media Subcommittee, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the party’s public image and fostering engagement with the electorate.

In a video message accompanying his resignation, Mursalin expressed deep frustration with the current political landscape. “The NCP was founded with the vision of realising a Bangladesh rooted in equality through a new constitution and a rejuvenated republic,” he said. “Yet, the political system since 1971 continues to bear the hallmarks of a colonial mindset, and today’s rulers are advancing along the same authoritarian path.”

He also reflected on his family’s legacy of political and literary activism. His grandfather, poet Khan Muhammad Moinuddin, was imprisoned alongside the national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam for opposing British rule. Mursalin’s father similarly championed anti-colonial ideals through journalism and literature. Mursalin himself spent a decade in journalism, striving to raise political awareness among the public.

Mursalin cited internal party decisions as a key reason for his resignation, particularly compromises in the July election manifesto and related policy documents. “The party has weakened by failing to cultivate a politically conscious generation and by opportunistic concessions,” he remarked.

Despite stepping down from party posts, Mursalin affirmed that he would remain active in political life. “I will continue to stand with the people, on the streets and in movements. You will see me actively engaged very soon,” he stated.

This resignation forms part of a broader pattern of departures within the NCP, raising questions about internal cohesion and strategic direction. A brief overview of recent resignations is presented below:

Serial Leader Position Date of Resignation
1 Khan Muhammad Mursalin Deputy Chief Coordinator 1 January 2026
2 [Name 2] [Position 2] [Date]
3 [Name 3] [Position 3] [Date]
4 [Name 4] [Position 4] [Date]
5 [Name 5] [Position 5] [Date]

Political analysts suggest that Mursalin’s departure could significantly impact the NCP’s internal stability, raising concerns over the party’s unity and future strategic direction. The continuing wave of resignations has amplified speculation about leadership challenges and potential restructuring in the months ahead.
