With the 12th February parliamentary and referendum elections approaching, citizens are navigating a complex landscape of service suspensions and travel restrictions. Many Dhaka residents, eager to cast their votes in their home districts, are already facing challenges in reaching their destinations.

“I went to the train station this morning but couldn’t get a ticket. Now I’m at the bus terminal, and even here we can’t get seats,” said Tajul Islam, a garment worker from Mirpur, waiting at Mohakhali Bus Terminal with his family. Having received leave from his factory, he was headed to his village in Tangail. By noon, he and his family had already spent over 90 minutes waiting for a bus, uncertain if they would reach home before nightfall. Yet, he remained determined: “I haven’t been able to vote for years. This time, I want to cast my own vote.”

Government directives have closed industrial factories, with regular holidays extended to Wednesday and Thursday, alongside the usual Friday-Saturday weekend break. This extended leave has created heavy passenger congestion at bus, train, and launch terminals across Dhaka since early Tuesday.

Shops and markets are also affected. Many large shopping centres and bazaars announced temporary closures, prompting residents to complete urgent purchases in advance. “Most shopkeepers go to their villages, and vehicles will be limited. I’m stocking up on essentials just to be safe,” said Shirin Sultana, a resident of Panthapath.
