Seven Injured in Duck Dispute Attack

In Netrokona’s Mohanganj Upazila, a dispute over ducks escalated into a violent attack, leaving seven people, including a woman, injured. The victims were promptly taken to the local health complex for treatment, while one of the seriously injured individuals was transferred to Mymensingh Medical College (MMMC) for specialised care. A formal complaint was filed at the local police station on Sunday, 15 March.

Police launched an operation later that night, resulting in the arrest of one suspect. Mohanganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Hafizul Islam Harun confirmed the details on Monday, 16 March. The incident occurred a day earlier, on Saturday, 14 March, in Ali Pur village of Suair Union.

Those injured in the attack have been identified as Mojibur Rahman (55), Tarikul Islam (45), Angur Ali (28), Baizid (19), Sahera Khatun (60), Shapla (22), and Ariful Islam Swadhin (36). Among them, Ariful Islam Swadhin sustained severe injuries and was immediately transferred to MMMC, while the remaining victims received treatment at the local health complex.

According to local sources, the conflict began when Masud Mia’s associates forcefully released ducks into a pond in front of Rafiqul Islam’s house. When Rafiqul Islam’s family attempted to intervene, a quarrel erupted between the two groups. The situation escalated further when Masud Mia’s associates armed themselves with traditional weapons and launched a sudden attack on Rafiqul Islam and his associates, resulting in multiple injuries.

Rafiqul Islam subsequently filed a police complaint on Sunday, naming eight individuals as the perpetrators. The accused are:

Masud Mia (38)

Nehatullah (55)

Amirul (20)

Aliullah (60)

Ollullah (55)

Soleman (25)

Salman (22)

Seju (27)

Following the complaint, Nehatullah was arrested and presented before the court on Monday afternoon. Police operations are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects. When contacted for comment, Masud Mia declined to speak, abruptly ending the phone call.

The incident has raised concerns among the local community about escalating disputes over livestock and the use of weapons in rural conflicts. Authorities have assured residents that measures will be taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
