The winter season has tightened its icy grasp across Bangladesh, as a formidable cold wave sweeps through the nation, disrupting the daily rhythms of life with dense fog and biting winds. According to recent meteorological forecasts, a significant drop in mercury is anticipated for Tuesday, 6 January, with minimum temperatures expected to plummet to a frigid 5 to 7 degrees Celsius in several regions. This sudden atmospheric shift has heightened concerns regarding public health and safety as the country prepares for one of the most intense cooling periods of the year.
Mostafa Kamal Palash, a distinguished weather and climate researcher at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, highlighted the severity of the situation in a social media update on Monday. He indicated that a thick shroud of moderate to dense fog is highly likely to envelop districts across all eight divisions from Monday evening through Tuesday night. Residents in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Dhaka divisions are particularly advised that sunlight may remain elusive until at least midday on Tuesday. Conversely, the Khulna and Barishal divisions might see the sun break through the mist slightly earlier, around 10:00 AM.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has reinforced these warnings, suggesting that January could see multiple cold waves, with some isolated areas potentially recording temperatures as low as 4 degrees Celsius. Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallick, a senior meteorologist, noted that the mercury would begin its gradual descent on Monday night. Experts predict that the current combination of fog and bone-chilling cold may persist until at least 12 January, posing significant challenges for the elderly, children, and low-income communities who lack adequate protection against the elements.
