Shahnaz Rahmatullah’s Prothom Bangladesh Reimagined

A revitalised version of the iconic patriotic song Prothom Bangladesh is poised for release on 26 March, commemorating Bangladesh’s Independence Day with a renewed artistic vision. The initiative seeks to bridge generational divides by reintroducing a timeless composition to younger audiences while preserving its emotional and historical resonance.

The song was originally brought to prominence by the legendary Shahnaz Rahmatullah, whose stirring performance helped cement its place in the nation’s cultural memory. Written by Moniruzzaman Monir and composed by Alauddin Ali, the piece first aired in the late 1970s on Bangladesh Television’s programme Bornali, produced by Nawazish Ali Khan. Its evocative lyrics, expressing unwavering devotion to the homeland, quickly resonated across the country and have endured for decades.

The newly produced version introduces a contemporary arrangement under the musical direction of Fuad Al Muqtadir. The project is spearheaded by executive producer Tajwar Awwal, alongside production collaborators Adnan Karim and Ashiq Zaman. Together, the team has sought to maintain the song’s original spirit while enhancing its sonic landscape to appeal to contemporary tastes.

A collective of prominent and emerging artists has contributed vocals to this rendition. The line-up includes Shayan Chowdhury Arnob, Alif Alauddin, Sinthi Saha, Animesh Roy, Kazi Faisal Ahmed, and Shubho, among others. Their collaboration reflects a conscious effort to merge established musical traditions with fresh interpretative voices.

This release also marks the debut project of Firewax, a newly formed music and creative production platform. The organisation has stated that Prothom Bangladesh was chosen deliberately for its enduring symbolism—embodying patriotism, unity, and the collective emotional identity of the Bangladeshi people. The goal is to reframe the song for a modern audience without diluting its heritage.

The accompanying music video adopts a live performance format, emphasising authenticity through real-time vocals and instrumentation. This stylistic approach not only highlights the performers’ artistry but also fosters a sense of immediacy and connection with viewers. A particularly compelling aspect of the visual narrative is its symbolic depiction of generational continuity: established artists gradually make way for younger performers, signifying the ongoing evolution of Bangladesh’s cultural landscape.
