Shailkupa Truck Accident Claims Lives of Two Men

A tragic road accident occurred last night in Shailkupa, Jhenaidah, when a truck carrying a load of timber lost control, smashed through a bridge railing, and plunged into the Kumar River, resulting in the deaths of the driver and his assistant. The incident took place around 1:00 a.m. at the old Bordah Bridge along the Jhenaidah-Kushtia highway, near the Garaganj Bazaar area.

The deceased have been identified as Sohel Sheikh (27), the driver, and Mobarak Hossain (20), his assistant. Both were residents of Gajamnikund village, Pabna Sadar Upazila. Sohel was the son of Abul Kalam Sheikh, while Mobarak was the son of Jafar Mia.

According to Abdus Salam, Deputy Director of Jhenaidah Fire Service and Civil Defence, the truck had departed from Jessore en route to Kushtia with a cargo of timber. “The vehicle lost control upon reaching the old Bordah Bridge near Garaganj Bazaar,” he explained. “It broke through the railing and fell into the river.”

Emergency teams from Jhenaidah Fire Service and Shailkupa Station immediately rushed to the scene to conduct rescue operations. After hours of painstaking work through the night, the body of assistant Mobarak Hossain was recovered at dawn, while driver Sohel Sheikh’s body was retrieved around 8:00 a.m. The wrecked truck was subsequently lifted from the river.

The tragic incident drew the attention of local authorities, and Jhenaidah Deputy Commissioner Abdullah Al Masud visited the site this morning to assess the situation. He stated that a thorough investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the accident and review the bridge’s structural integrity.

Local residents expressed concern over the condition of the old Bordah Bridge, noting that the bridge has long been prone to accidents and in urgent need of repair. They called for immediate action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
