Discussions regarding Bangladesh cricket star Shakib Al Hasan’s return to the national fold have resurfaced amid ongoing debates over a possible World Cup boycott. Following a board meeting yesterday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed that it is actively working on facilitating the all-rounder’s comeback to domestic and international cricket. However, Shakib himself has opted for a cautious approach, refraining from making any immediate public statements.
At the BCB board meeting held on Saturday, 24 January, a resolution was passed to reconsider Shakib for inclusion in future national squads, reflecting the board’s renewed interest in the veteran player.
When contacted by a private television channel regarding the development, Shakib remarked, “I will respond to this matter carefully and in due course.”
Shakib, who has been absent from the national team since the political upheaval following the fall of the Awami League, has previously expressed his desire to return and play on home soil before retirement. Nevertheless, political instability, particularly after the mass protests in July, prevented his homecoming.
BCB Director Amjad Hossain elaborated on the board’s plans, stating that detailed discussions had taken place. “If we can secure Shakib in a timely manner, and provided his fitness, availability, and readiness to participate at the relevant venues are ensured, the selection committee will consider him for the squad. Where necessary, the board will issue a No Objection Certificate (NOC) for international tournaments,” he said.
Amjad further confirmed that the BCB has proposed reintegrating Shakib under a central contract. The board will also coordinate with the government regarding any ongoing legal or disciplinary matters concerning him.
Regarding how Shakib’s potential return was introduced during the meeting, BCB Director Asif Akbar explained that discussions initially focused on contracted players and their grading. “During the discussion, one of the directors suggested that Shakib is keen to play and has contacted the board. The matter was communicated to the chairperson to facilitate official channels with the government. His personal and legal issues are a matter for the authorities; from the board’s perspective, we want him in the squad. His name has been proposed for inclusion in the list of contracted players. Shakib Al Hasan is a brand—a player of his calibre may not appear again for decades.”
