Shakib Al Hasan, the illustrious Bangladesh all-rounder, last represented the national cricket team in 2024 against India. Since that match, the 37-year-old has been absent from international duties, and legal complications have prevented him from returning to Bangladesh. In fact, even an earlier attempt to come back from Dubai had to be postponed after he reconsidered his plans.
Recently, discussions regarding Shakib’s return to Bangladesh have gained renewed momentum. Aminul Haque, former national footballer and the current State Minister for Youth and Sports, expressed a cautiously positive stance on the matter, emphasising that any resolution must operate within a legal framework.
He stated, “Shakib’s case is fundamentally a matter of state policy. He must personally address the pending legal issues. If he is exonerated and clears his cases, we will be accommodating and flexible about his return.”
On the administrative side, Najmul Abedin Fahim, Chief of Cricket Operations at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), hinted at tangible progress. “The ongoing initiatives concerning Shakib are moving rapidly. From what I have seen and heard, there is a strong possibility that we may witness his return to Bangladesh very soon,” he noted.
Regarding his potential participation in the upcoming home series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin in mid-April, Fahim refrained from giving a definitive answer. Nevertheless, he expressed optimism: “I remain hopeful. Shakib could return at any moment, and his presence would add a unique dimension to the team. We all want him back, and I am confident this will materialise.”
Shakib’s return could provide both a morale boost and tactical advantage for Bangladesh ahead of crucial international fixtures. His leadership, experience, and all-round skills are considered irreplaceable assets for the team.
