Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson is set to make his return to the Indian Premier League (IPL), this time as a member of the coaching staff. Watson will take over as the assistant coach of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) ahead of the 2026 IPL season.
The Queensland-born cricketer, who previously worked as an assistant coach for Delhi Capitals under Ricky Ponting, is back in the IPL dugout after a three-year hiatus.
Watson, 44, boasts an impressive international career, having played 59 Tests, 190 ODIs, and 58 T20Is for Australia. He remains one of the most decorated players in IPL history, featuring in 12 seasons, including the inaugural 2008 campaign, where he played a pivotal role in leading Rajasthan Royals to their maiden IPL title. His brilliant all-round performances that year earned him the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award — an honour he claimed again in 2013.
At KKR, Watson will work closely with Abhishek Nayar, who was recently appointed as the head coach of the two-time IPL champions. His addition is expected to bring depth and strategic expertise to the team’s batting unit.
Meanwhile, Dwayne Bravo will continue in his role as the team’s mentor, ensuring a wealth of experience in the dressing room as KKR gears up for the upcoming IPL seasons.
With a star-studded coaching lineup and Watson’s proven leadership, KKR fans can expect a strong resurgence when the 2026 IPL season begins.
