Sheikh Hasina mourns: Khaleda Zia’s death an irreplaceable loss

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, has passed away, prompting an official message of condolence from the country’s incumbent, albeit recently ousted, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The statement, shared via an official post on the now-dormant Bangladesh Awami League account, praised Khaleda Zia’s role in the struggle to establish democracy and highlighted her enduring contributions to the nation.

In her message titled “Condolences on Khaleda Zia’s Death,” Sheikh Hasina described the loss as “irreparable for Bangladesh’s political landscape and the leadership of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).” She extended her prayers for the departed leader’s soul and expressed heartfelt sympathy to Khaleda Zia’s family, particularly her son Tareq Rahman, and the party’s supporters.

Sheikh Hasina added: “I pray that Allah grants them patience and the strength to endure this difficult time.”

The political rivalry between Sheikh Hasina and Khaleda Zia has been a defining feature of Bangladeshi politics for decades. Between them, the two leaders have collectively served as Prime Minister for over three decades of the country’s 54-year history. Their intense competition has, at times, drawn international attention, with foreign media often referring to it as the “Battle of the Two Begums.”

Khaleda Zia, the widow of former President Ziaur Rahman, led the BNP and was known for her political resilience, particularly during periods of military rule and political unrest. Sheikh Hasina, the daughter of Bangladesh’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been widely recognised for her developmental policies and efforts to stabilise the nation during turbulent periods.

The following table summarises the tenures of Bangladesh’s two most influential female leaders:

Leader Party Terms as Prime Minister Total Years in Office
Sheikh Hasina Awami League 1996–2001, 2009–2024 17
Khaleda Zia BNP 1991–1996, 2001–2006 10

The political landscape in Bangladesh has been significantly shaped by the contrasting visions and leadership styles of these two figures. Their rivalry has influenced policy, governance, and the country’s broader democratic trajectory, leaving a legacy that will continue to shape Bangladeshi politics for years to come.

Sheikh Hasina’s condolence message underscores the historical significance of Khaleda Zia’s leadership and acknowledges the profound impact of her passing on the nation.
