Shibir Behind Abrar’s Killing: Claims BNP Leader Nilufar

Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, BNP’s Assistant Secretary for Self-Reliance Affairs and former Member of Parliament, has claimed that Abrar Fahad, a student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), was killed by members of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir.

She asserted that the murder was carried out by those known as the “Helmet Force”, whom she identified as Shibir activists.

Nilufar made the remarks on Thursday night (18 September) during a talk show broadcast by a private television channel.

Allegations by Nilufar Chowdhury Moni

  • According to her, the current government is surrounded by Jamaat.
  • She added: “We used to call them the Helmet Force, assuming they were members of the Chhatra League. But in reality, they were Shibir men operating under cover. The fact that Shishir Moni, a lawyer with known Shibir links, defended the accused in Abrar’s murder case proves who was truly behind the killing.”
  • She further argued that the very act of Shibir-linked lawyers defending the accused itself indicates Shibir’s involvement in the murder.

Background of the Case

  • On 16 March this year, the High Court upheld the verdict delivered by Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal–1 in the Abrar murder case.
  • The verdict confirmed the death penalty for 20 individuals and life imprisonment for 5 others.

Timeline of Events

Date Event Description
6 October 2019 Abrar Fahad’s body recovered from Sher-e-Bangla Hall at BUET.
Later that day His father filed a murder case with Chawkbazar Police Station.
16 March 2025 High Court upheld the trial court verdict: 20 sentenced to death, 5 to life.

Nilufar Chowdhury Moni concluded that these facts collectively demonstrate that Shibir orchestrated Abrar’s killing under the guise of others, while political narratives misdirected the blame.
