Shock in FA Cup Fifth Round: Liverpool and Aston Villa Exit

Mohamed Salah inspired a commanding performance as Liverpool secured a 3-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion to reach the fifth round of the FA Cup. On the same evening, Aston Villa were eliminated after a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Newcastle United.

At Anfield on Saturday night, Liverpool dominated Brighton in the fourth-round tie. The hosts opened the scoring through Curtis Jones in the 42nd minute. Rising at the far post to meet Milos Kerkez’s cross from the right, Jones scored his first league start goal since 17 January, putting Liverpool ahead.

Liverpool intensified their control after the interval. In the 56th minute, Dominik Szoboszlai doubled the lead with a powerful strike, assisted by a precise cross from Salah. The Hungarian midfielder notched his tenth goal of the season, continuing his impressive contribution from midfield.

Salah then added the finishing touch in the 66th minute, converting a penalty after being fouled in the box by Pascal Groß. This marked his seventh goal of the season for Liverpool and showcased the Egyptian star’s influence in both scoring and creating opportunities.

Brighton had moments of promise but could not capitalise. Goalkeeper Alisson Becker produced a crucial save from Diego Gómez, while Lewis Dunk missed a notable chance. In the closing stages, 17-year-old substitute Rio Ngumouha appeared to score, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Meanwhile, at St James’ Park, Newcastle United caused an upset by defeating a ten-man Aston Villa 3-1. Sandro Tonali scored twice to secure Newcastle’s progression to the fifth round. The absence of VAR fuelled debate throughout the match, as multiple referee decisions drew criticism from players and supporters alike.
