In a disturbing turn of events in Kushtia, a female gynaecologist, Dr Sharmin Sultana, was dragged onto the street and brutally beaten by a group of women alleging fraud. Her husband, a doctor at Kushtia Medical College Hospital, was also assaulted while trying to rescue her. The police later intervened and brought the traumatised couple to the local police station.

📍 Incident Overview

Date & Time Monday, 5 May 2025, Afternoon
Location In front of Life Diagnostic Centre, Arjundas Agarwala Road, Kushtia
Victims Dr Sharmin Sultana (Gynaecologist), Dr Masud Rana (Husband)
Perpetrators Group of 15–20 women
Accusations Alleged fraud, false job promises, and embezzlement

🎯 What Happened?

According to eyewitnesses and police sources, Dr Sharmin was attacked shortly after arriving by rickshaw at Life Diagnostic Centre, where she regularly attends patients. The group of enraged women, allegedly waiting in ambush, dragged her out of the rickshaw, pulled her by the hair onto the road, tore at her clothing, and beat her mercilessly in full public view.

A number of video clips of the assault have since gone viral on social media, sparking widespread outrage. In one such video, women can be heard accusing the doctor of taking money under false pretences – promising overseas jobs and failing to deliver either employment or refunds.

👨‍⚕️ Doctors React with Dismay

Dr Masud Rana, husband of the assaulted doctor, rushed to the scene but was also physically attacked. Speaking to the press from Kushtia Model Police Station later that evening, he categorically denied all allegations.

“My wife is innocent. She has never even been to Meherpur, let alone dealt with those making the accusations. This is a calculated attempt to defame and destroy her reputation,” Dr Rana said.
“She was abducted, beaten, and publicly humiliated. Even I was not spared – my clothes were torn, and I was assaulted.”

🛡️ Police and Official Response

Authority Statement
Kushtia Superintendent of Police (SP) Mizanur Rahman “It looked like a mob situation. We rescued the woman and brought her to the station. We’ve requested all related documents regarding the allegations. Action will be taken based on our investigation.”
Life Diagnostic Centre MD, Md Shamim “She was attacked the moment she got off the rickshaw. We tried to intervene with the help of bystanders.”

🚨 Allegations vs. Legal Process

Several women claimed the doctor promised jobs abroad and collected significant sums of money without fulfilling those promises. However, colleagues and employees at the diagnostic centre argue that if there were complaints, they should have been taken to the authorities, not resolved through mob violence.

🩺 Medical Community Stands in Solidarity

Later that evening, at least 10 doctors from Kushtia General and Kushtia Medical College Hospitals visited the police station to show support. Dr Nasimul Bari Bappi said:

“Even senior doctors from Dhaka called us. This kind of treatment towards medical professionals is unacceptable. We demand justice.”

⚖️ What’s Next?

  • The couple remains at the police station as investigations continue.
  • Police have requested formal documentation of the allegations.
  • Medical associations are expected to release official statements condemning the assault.
