In a candid interview, she reflected on her past hits, specifically the 2012 chart-buster ‘Chikni Chameli’ from the film Agneepath.

While the song remains a staple of Bollywood dance, Ghoshal admitted that her perspective has evolved. “At the time, I didn’t feel uncomfortable,” she noted. “However, with maturity comes a deeper understanding of the lyrics. I now realise that many of these songs lean heavily into the objectification of women.”

The singer revealed that the success of her upbeat tracks led to a deluge of similar offers, many of which she found distasteful. She cited a specific instance where a lyricist friend proposed a song with lines comparing a woman to “chicken to be consumed.” Ghoshal summarily rejected the track, citing a lack of artistic merit and respect.

She emphasized that as a global performer, her audience includes countless children. “When a song becomes a hit, I am expected to perform it on stage. It is profoundly uncomfortable to sing suggestive lines in front of families and young fans,” she explained.

While she isn’t retiring from music—unlike the rumours surrounding some of her peers—her “play” button for suggestive cinema tracks has officially been switched off.
