The National Award-winning vocalist has declared that she will no longer record “item songs” or tracks featuring suggestive, objectifying lyrics.
Known for her staggering versatility—ranging from the classical intricacies of ‘Mere Dholna’ to the high-energy folk-pop of ‘Chikni Chameli’—Ghoshal’s decision stems from a place of personal growth and moral responsibility. While the song remains a staple of Bollywood dance, Ghoshal admitted that her perspective has evolved. “At the time, I didn’t feel uncomfortable,” she noted. “However, with maturity comes a deeper understanding of the lyrics. I now realise that many of these songs lean heavily into the objectification of women.”
The singer revealed that the success of her upbeat tracks led to a deluge of similar offers, many of which she found distasteful. She cited a specific instance where a lyricist friend proposed a song with lines comparing a woman to “chicken to be consumed.” Ghoshal summarily rejected the track, citing a lack of artistic merit and respect.
She emphasized that as a global performer, her audience includes countless children. “When a song becomes a hit, I am expected to perform it on stage. It is profoundly uncomfortable to sing suggestive lines in front of families and young fans,” she explained.
