Atlético Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has issued an apology following his sideline behaviour during the Spanish Super Cup semi-final in Saudi Arabia, where his team suffered a 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid. The Argentine coach expressed regret for mocking Brazilian winger Vinícius Júnior during the high-stakes encounter.
Known for his fiery temperament, Simeone was repeatedly caught on camera provoking Vinícius throughout the match. Reports suggest that he made comments regarding the player’s future at Real Madrid, allegedly saying, “Florentino will get rid of you, remember what I’m telling you.” The incident sparked considerable media attention, highlighting tensions between coaches and players during crucial fixtures.
Ahead of Atlético’s Copa del Rey last-16 clash against Deportivo La Coruña, Simeone addressed the controversy at a press conference, stating, “I apologise to Florentino Pérez and Vinícius for my behaviour. Involving myself in that situation was a mistake. I acknowledge it was wrong. The team that won deserved to advance, and they did.”
When asked whether his conduct had crossed the line, Simeone added, “I am apologising, but I am not seeking forgiveness. There is nothing more to say.”
The match itself saw tensions escalate further during the second half, particularly when Vinícius was substituted. Sections of the stadium erupted in chants and whistles. Despite having gone 19 games without scoring prior, Vinícius left the pitch smiling, gesturing towards Simeone and the crowd while saying, “Listen, listen!”
Real Madrid progressed to the Super Cup final after their narrow semi-final victory but were defeated 3-2 by arch-rivals Barcelona. Vinícius scored a spectacular goal in the first half of the final, underlining his influence on the team despite the loss.
Atlético Madrid’s current position in La Liga reflects the competitive challenges they face this season:
| Team | Played | Wins | Draws | Losses | Goal Difference | Points | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Barcelona | 21 | 15 | 3 | 3 | +21 | 48 | 1 |
| Real Madrid | 21 | 14 | 5 | 2 | +19 | 47 | 2 |
| Sevilla | 21 | 13 | 4 | 4 | +12 | 43 | 3 |
| Atlético Madrid | 21 | 11 | 5 | 5 | +9 | 38 | 4 |
Currently trailing league leaders Barcelona by 11 points, Atlético face a challenging campaign ahead. Simeone’s apology may help mend tensions, but the incident has intensified scrutiny on the coach’s sideline conduct and player relations, especially during high-pressure matches in domestic and international competitions.
