In the bustling metropolis of Dhaka, the Metro Rail has become an indispensable part of daily life for city dwellers. Renowned for its speed, reliability, and efficiency, the service has transformed urban commuting, particularly for regular passengers who typically rely on permanent cards such as Rapid Passes or MRT Passes to streamline their journeys. Until recently, topping up these cards required a physical visit to designated station counters, often resulting in long queues and frustrating delays, especially during peak hours.
However, those days of inconvenience are now a thing of the past. Embracing the digital era, Dhaka Metro Rail authorities have introduced an online recharge facility for permanent cardholders. Since 25 November, commuters can conveniently add credit to their cards using various digital payment methods, including credit cards, bKash, Nagad, Rocket, and other internet banking platforms.
Recharging via the bKash app is remarkably straightforward. Users simply select the “Metro Rail” option within the app, which redirects them to the official portal at www.rapidpass.com.bd. New users need to click “Register” and provide the necessary personal information, which is verified through an OTP (One-Time Password). Once registered, users can log in easily using their mobile number or email address along with a password for subsequent transactions.
To complete a recharge, passengers select their Rapid Pass or MRT Pass, enter the desired amount, and choose the “Pay with bKash” option. After providing their bKash number and verification code, the transaction is processed, and a confirmation SMS is sent. The online system allows a minimum recharge of 100 BDT and a maximum of 5,000 BDT per transaction. Additionally, bKash users can receive up to 100 BDT cashback on certain recharges.
The Metro Rail authorities have confirmed that the same process is available through Nagad, Rocket, credit cards, and other online banking services. It is important to note, however, that the recharge remains in a pending state until the card is tapped at a station, and multiple pending recharges cannot be held simultaneously. Blacklisted, returned, or invalid cards are not eligible for recharge. Pending recharges can be cancelled up to seven days before the station tap, subject to a 5% service charge. Currently, refund services are temporarily suspended.
This initiative marks a significant step towards cashless, convenient, and time-efficient commuting for Dhaka Metro passengers. It underscores the city’s commitment to digital innovation and modernising urban transport, making daily travel smoother and more seamless than ever before.
