Renowned Bangladeshi singer Tawsif Ahmed has returned home after receiving hospital treatment for a severe stroke, but his physical recovery has been overshadowed by emotional distress caused by online harassment. The artist, who required 27 stitches to his head following the medical emergency, has alleged that he became the target of cyberbullying, defamatory remarks, and false information on social media after news of his illness became public.
Tawsif was discharged from hospital on Friday and is currently resting at his residence in Mohammadpur, Dhaka. Speaking to Prothom Alo on Saturday morning, he revealed that shortly after sharing updates about his health on Facebook, a section of social media users began posting hurtful comments and baseless allegations. The remarks, he said, deeply affected him at a time when he was already vulnerable both physically and mentally.
According to Tawsif, the incident occurred on the morning of 28 December, when he suddenly lost consciousness at home. He remained unconscious for a prolonged period before being discovered by his wife and children, who rushed him to a private hospital in Dhaka. Doctors later confirmed that he had suffered a stroke and sustained a serious head injury, necessitating multiple stitches. After several days under close medical supervision, his condition stabilised sufficiently for him to return home.
In a strongly worded Facebook post, Tawsif addressed the online abuse directly.
“Following the news of my stroke, several individuals made negative and misleading comments. While I am personally resilient, I am considering filing cases under the Cyber Security Act for cyberbullying, defamation, and spreading false information,”
he wrote.
Elaborating further, Tawsif expressed concern over what he described as a growing lack of empathy on social media. He lamented that instead of compassion, some users appeared to react with mockery and even celebration at another person’s illness. Particularly distressing for him was the spread of fabricated claims involving his family, which he considers a serious offence and an attack on his dignity.
Despite the turmoil, the singer addressed his fans with an emotional message of gratitude. He humbly acknowledged that while he may not have achieved superstardom, the fact that songs he recorded over 15 years ago continue to resonate with listeners remains his greatest accomplishment. He urged the public not to spread rumours about him without knowing the truth and asked for prayers during his recovery.
Tawsif also disclosed that he has been battling various health complications for years, making it difficult to maintain a regular work schedule. Although he is currently feeling slightly better, doctors have advised further medical tests and prolonged rest.
Notably, this is not the first major health scare for the artist. He previously suffered two heart attacks, the first in April 2022 and the second in October 2024, after which he significantly reduced his professional commitments on medical advice.
