Six Arrested in Job Scam Posing as Military Officers

The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-4) has arrested six individuals, including the ringleader, involved in a fraudulent scheme that promised jobs in the military and other government institutions by impersonating army officers.

Details of the Arrest

  • The arrests were made on Monday, 22 September, during operations across various areas of Dhaka and Savar.
  • Those arrested are:
    • Sohel Rana, also known as Milon
    • Taiyeb, also known as Mostak
    • Sajib Munsi
    • Shamim Ahmed
    • Mowlad Ali Khan
    • Sohel Rana, also known as Jinnah

Seized Items:

  • 1 private car
  • 7 mobile phones
  • 2 counterfeit appointment letters
  • BDT 95,200 in cash
  • A victim who had been lured under the promise of a military job

During a press briefing on Tuesday, 23 September, at RAB-4 headquarters in Mirpur, Commander Shahabuddin Kabir explained the modus operandi:

  1. A complainant named Sohel Rana reported that his younger brother failed the preliminary selection for the Sofipur Ansar Battalion on 14 September.
  2. An unidentified individual contacted the complainant via phone, claiming that his brother had some health issues. When asked for identification, the caller introduced himself as Major Sohel and arranged a meeting.
  3. The complainant met Sohel Rana at a hotel in Shah Ali Thana, Dhaka. Sohel introduced Taiyebur Rahman as a colonel.
  4. They assured the victim that they could secure a position for his brother in the Ansar Battalion for BDT 1.2 million, claiming connections with senior officials.

The complainant paid BDT 400,000 via bank transfer on 15 September. After receiving the money, Sohel, Taiyebur Rahman, and other accomplices issued an appointment letter to the victim’s brother. They later demanded an additional BDT 100,000 via bKash and cash.

  • Upon returning home, the victim noticed inconsistencies in the appointment letter compared to authentic Ansar recruitment letters.
  • Further inquiry confirmed the document was fraudulent.

Investigation Findings

  • Preliminary questioning revealed that the accused are part of an organised criminalnetwork operating in Dhaka for years, targeting job seekers.
  • Multiple cases have been filed against them at various police stations.
  • They were previously arrested twice by RAB-4 for similar offences.

Commander Shahabuddin Kabir emphasised that the ringleader and his associates used military impersonation to defraud citizens, highlighting the need for vigilance among job seekers.
