Six Arrested Over Alleged Attack on Police

In Gaibandha’s Gobindaganj Upazila, a violent incident occurred on Sunday night (25 January) when police attempting to arrest a local Awami League leader faced organised resistance. The leader, Zobayer Hasan Shafiq Mahmud Golap, whose activities in Bagda Bazar have been officially restricted, allegedly mobilised supporters to confront law enforcement, resulting in an attack and property damage.

Police conducted a night-long operation in response to the incident, ultimately arresting six individuals involved in the assault. The arrestees are identified as Nuruzzaman Mia, Manik Mia, Sujon Mia, Md. Tajul, Habibur Rahman, and Samiul Islam.

According to law enforcement sources, the operation targeted Zobayer Hasan Shafiq Mahmud Golap, the Upazila Awami League leader and Union Parishad chairman. During the attempted arrest, the leader and his associates reportedly attacked police personnel, vandalising two police motorcycles in the process.

Several officers sustained injuries in the confrontation, including SI Selim Reza, SI Mir Kayes, and SI Mominul. Following the attack, additional police forces and military personnel were deployed to restore order in the area.

The Officer-in-Charge of Gobindaganj Police Station, Mohammad Mozammel Haque, confirmed that a case has been filed on the same night. While the main suspect remains at large, the six individuals arrested have been sent to Gaibandha Court for legal proceedings.
