Sixteen Dead Following Blast at US Explosives Factory

A massive explosion at an explosives factory in Tennessee has killed 16 people, authorities confirmed on Saturday, revising the initial death toll after locating two individuals previously thought missing and presumed dead.

The blast occurred on Friday at a factory in the town of Bucksnort, operated by Accurate Energetic Systems, a company producing explosives for both military and demolition purposes.

“We have been able to locate and determine the two other folks were not on the site,” said Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis, clarifying earlier reports of 18 presumed fatalities. Personal belongings and vehicles of the two missing individuals were found at the scene, which had initially led authorities to believe they had perished.

The explosion destroyed an entire building on the factory’s expansive campus, reportedly shaking homes several miles away and sending debris flying across the surrounding area.

In a statement, Accurate Energetic Systems described the incident as “a tragic accident.”

Despite the ongoing investigation, authorities have yet to determine the origin or cause of the blast.

Brice McCracken, from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), told reporters: “We are not any closer today to determining the origin and cause of this explosion.”

Sheriff Davis acknowledged that ruling out foul play could take considerable time: “Can I say we’re going to rule out foul play? We can’t answer that. That might be days or weeks or months before we can do that.”

Officials are meticulously processing the blast site, moving “one foot at a time” due to the hazardous nature of the materials. Bomb technicians are called in whenever there is any perceived risk.

Authorities plan to use DNA testing to identify remains, given the extent of the destruction.

Task Method
Victim Identification DNA testing
Site Clearance Step-by-step processing with bomb technicians
Investigation ATF-led inquiry into origin and cause

The Tennessee explosion highlights the inherent dangers of handling explosives and underscores the careful and time-consuming work required to investigate such incidents safely.
