Snatch Attempt Kills Woman in Dhaka

A young woman has died in a tragic incident in the capital after being thrown from a moving rickshaw during an attempted snatch-and-grab, raising fresh concerns over public safety on comparatively quiet city roads.

The incident took place at approximately 9:00 am on Thursday, 19 March 2026, near the metro station area in Turag, where assailants reportedly targeted the victim’s handbag while she was travelling home.

The deceased has been identified as Mukta Akter, 21, who succumbed to her injuries later in the day after being transferred between multiple hospitals for treatment.

According to her husband, Limon Hossain, Mukta was returning home by auto-rickshaw when the attack occurred. “As the vehicle passed the metro rail area, snatchers grabbed her bag and pulled it forcefully. She lost balance and fell from the rickshaw, sustaining critical injuries,” he recounted.

Local residents immediately came to her aid and rushed her to nearby medical facilities. She was first taken to a private hospital in the area and later shifted to another as her condition deteriorated. Eventually, she was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite doctors’ efforts, she was pronounced dead at approximately 1:45 pm.

Authorities confirmed that her body has been kept at the hospital morgue for further procedures. Inspector Md. Faruk, in charge of the police camp at the hospital, stated that the matter has been formally reported to the relevant police station and an investigation is underway.

The incident has sparked alarm among residents, particularly as it occurred in daylight hours on a relatively less congested road. Urban security analysts note that such crimes often increase during periods when traffic thins out—especially ahead of major holidays like Eid al-Fitr, when many residents leave the city.

Law enforcement agencies are now under pressure to strengthen patrols and surveillance in vulnerable areas, including transport hubs and metro corridors. Officials have urged commuters, particularly women travelling alone, to remain vigilant and avoid carrying valuables in easily accessible bags.
