In a shocking incident in Rajshahi, a 55-year-old woman, Sohagi Begum, was allegedly murdered by her own son over a dispute linked to drug money. The horrific event occurred on the night of Saturday, 31 January, at approximately 9:30 pm near the Krishi Bank junction in the Kharkhari area of the city. Local residents intervened and apprehended the suspect, 42-year-old Sumon, before handing him over to the police.
According to local sources and law enforcement officials, Sohagi Begum was the widow of the late Azizul Islam, a long-time resident of Kharkhari. Her eldest son, Sumon, had reportedly struggled with drug addiction for several years. It is believed that during an argument over funds for narcotics, Sumon attacked his mother with a sharp weapon, inflicting multiple wounds to her abdomen and chest. The injuries proved fatal, resulting in her immediate death.
Following the attack, Sumon dragged his mother’s body approximately 100 metres from their home onto a main road. He reportedly intended to seek an auto-rickshaw to take her to the hospital. However, passersby noticed the lifeless body lying on the street and began questioning Sumon. Realising the situation had escalated, he fled back to his home and locked himself inside. The Chandrima police station was alerted, and officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards, arresting Sumon without further incident.
Chandrima Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Monirul Islam confirmed that the body had been recovered and sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RAMEC) for post-mortem examination. During preliminary questioning, Sumon admitted to being addicted to drugs. Legal action will be taken against him in accordance with Bangladeshi law.
Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) Deputy Commissioner and spokesperson Gaziur Rahman stated, “The suspect reportedly stabbed his mother to death. Local residents apprehended him and handed him over to the police for further investigation.”
The incident has left the local community in shock, highlighting concerns about the social consequences of substance abuse and domestic violence. Neighbours described the family as generally quiet but noted Sumon’s long-standing struggle with addiction, which had caused repeated tensions in the household.
