A father’s body remained outside his own home for 23 hours in Thakurgaon’s Baliadangi upazila due to an ongoing property dispute among his children. Talsim Uddin (70), who had not been living with his only son because of disagreements over land distribution, was residing at his daughter’s home, where he passed away.
Talsim Uddin died of old age on Sunday evening. When relatives brought his body to his residence in West Saralia village for burial, his son, Mohsin Ali, refused to accept it. Without his permission, the family could not dig a grave, forcing them to keep the body at the veranda of Talsim’s brother’s house.
Locals said the dispute intensified after Talsim transferred property in his daughters’ names. Mohsin alleged his father’s death was unnatural and lodged a written complaint at the police station, which created further complications surrounding the burial. Later, following requests from locals, the body was finally taken to Mohsin’s home.
Mohsin Ali stated that he suspected the circumstances of his father’s death because it occurred at his sister’s home, but they had now resolved the misunderstanding.
Hobibur Rahman, member of Duosuo Union Parishad, said the son withheld the body due to disagreements over land distribution. After discussions, Mohsin agreed to allow the burial, and the funeral took place at 4 pm.
Officer-in-Charge Darul Huda of Baliadangi Police Station said it was a family matter. As the son withdrew his complaint and no suspicion remained, the burial was allowed without a post-mortem.
