South Africa Penalised After Record-Breaking Defeat to England

South Africa, having already secured the ODI series against England with a match in hand, faced humiliation in the third and final game as they suffered a world-record defeat by 342 runs. To add to their misery, Temba Bavuma’s side was fined 5% of their match fees by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for maintaining a slow over-rate during the encounter.

England’s Batting Onslaught

On Sunday, South Africa’s bowlers were torn apart by the English batting line-up:

  • England scored 414 runs for 5 wickets.
  • The innings was powered by two centuries and a half-century, including a brilliant ton from Joe Root and Jacob Bethell.
  • South Africa failed to complete their overs within the allotted time, finishing an over short.

As a result, ICC Elite Panel match referee Javagal Srinath imposed the fine at the end of the match.

ICC Code of Conduct

According to Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct, players and support staff are liable to fines if matches are not completed within the scheduled time.

  • Penalty: 5% of the players’ match fee per over short.
  • South African captain Temba Bavuma accepted responsibility, avoiding the need for a formal hearing.

The sanction was confirmed by on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Russell Warren, third umpire Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid Saikat, and fourth umpire Mike Burns.

Historic Collapse

  • South Africa recorded:
    • Second-lowest ODI team total (72 runs).
    • Second-shortest ODI innings (20.5 overs).
  • Their captain, Bavuma, did not come out to bat due to injury.

Despite this humiliating loss, South Africa had already sealed the series victory, having beaten England in the first two matches.

With this result, the previous record for heaviest ODI defeat—Sri Lanka’s 317-run loss to India in 2023—was erased, as South Africa now holds the unwanted record of losing by the widest margin of 342 runs.
