South Korea’s exports soared to a record high for the month of July, propelled by strong overseas demand for semiconductors and automobiles, even amid mounting trade pressures from US-imposed tariffs, according to government data released on Friday.

Export Statistics

Category Value (USD) Year-on-Year Growth Remarks
Total Exports $60+ billion ↑ Nearly 6% Highest ever for the month of July
Semiconductors $14+ billion ↑ ~33% Record-breaking July performance
Main Drivers High-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips for AI demand

The Ministry of Industry and Trade reported that semiconductors, South Korea’s largest export sector, topped $14 billion, marking the highest July figure on record. This robust growth — an increase of nearly one-third over the previous year — was largely attributed to the soaring demand for artificial intelligence (AI) components, particularly high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips.

Tariff Challenges and Trade Negotiations

South Korea faced a 25% blanket tariff imposed by the United States, which was later reduced to 15% after last-minute bilateral negotiations. However, 50% duties remain in place on specific items such as steel and aluminium.

Despite the continuing pressure:

  • Steel and auto parts exports declined.
  • Exports to the United States still rose, thanks to increased shipments of semiconductors and wireless communication devices.

Government Response and Diplomatic Developments

In a public statement, Industry and Trade Minister Kim Jung-kwan acknowledged the difficult trading landscape:

“The trade and export environment surrounding South Korea was marked by extreme uncertainty in July, as the US prepared to impose new tariffs starting August 1.”

Nevertheless, he praised the nation’s business sector:

“Despite these difficult conditions, South Korean companies made an all-out effort to maintain export momentum, achieving a record-high performance for the month.”

Minister Kim further stated that ongoing negotiations with Washington had significantly reduced uncertainties and would allow South Korean exporters to compete in the US market on equal or even more favourable terms.

Upcoming Bilateral Talks

US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that South Korean President Lee Jae-myung is scheduled to visit the White House for bilateral talks within the next two weeks.

According to trade analysts, the forthcoming summit is expected to yield further details of the evolving trade agreement, potentially offering more clarity on tariff adjustments and long-term economic cooperation.
