Spanish Court Seeks Jail for Racist Fan

Spain’s judicial system is taking a firm stance against racism in football following an incident targeting Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior. A fan of Sevilla FC is facing a 21-month prison sentence for racially abusing the player, highlighting the country’s increasing intolerance toward discriminatory behaviour at sporting events.

The case stems from a La Liga match in October 2023 at Sevilla’s Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium. During the fixture against Real Madrid, the accused supporter repeatedly directed racial slurs at Vinícius, calling him a “monkey” and performing offensive gestures. According to prosecutors, the fan’s behaviour was explicitly racist, targeting the player’s skin colour and causing him humiliation, distress, and a sense of personal degradation. The incident was broadcast live on television, amplifying its impact.

The public prosecutor’s office has formally requested a 21-month prison sentence, along with a two-year stadium ban for the supporter if found guilty.
