Cyclone Ditva has caused severe devastation across Sri Lanka, triggering catastrophic floods and landslides that have claimed at least 474 lives, with nearly four hundred people still reported missing. To stand beside those affected, the government has established the Rebuilding Sri Lanka Fund. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has announced a donation of 300 million rupees to support this national initiative.
In a statement issued today, the Sri Lanka Cricket Board said that, as a symbolic institution representing the national team, it felt a profound sense of responsibility towards the country. According to the board, this contribution will significantly assist the government’s emergency relief efforts and help expedite the restoration of essential public services in the worst-hit areas.
The statement further added that the decision was taken to strengthen the government’s initiatives aimed at rebuilding the lives of people impacted by the cyclone.
Earlier, Sri Lankan cricketers had announced that all earnings from their tour of Pakistan would be donated to the country’s flood victims.
As part of the assistance effort, the national team’s head coach, Sanath Jayasuriya, said,
‘The situation in the country is extremely dire. We are deeply saddened. We are donating our match fees and all earnings from the Pakistan tour to support the flood-affected. We must face this difficult period together.’
