Sri Lanka Dominates Oman Twenty20 Encounter

In a commanding display at the Pallekele Stadium, Sri Lanka comprehensively defeated Oman by 105 runs in their Twenty20 World Cup clash, reinforcing their status as the stronger side. Ranked 8th in the ICC T20 rankings, Sri Lanka faced the 20th-ranked Oman, and the match largely unfolded as anticipated after Sri Lanka lost the toss and elected to bat first.

The home side set an imposing target of 225 for 5, courtesy of explosive batting from key players. Kusal Mendis scored 61 off 45 balls, Pawan Rathnayake contributed 60 from 28 deliveries, and captain Dasun Shanaka added a brisk 50 from just 20 balls. In doing so, Shanaka set the record for the fastest T20 fifty for Sri Lanka, while Rathnayake reached his fifty in 24 balls. Their aggressive approach propelled Sri Lanka to their second-highest total in a T20 World Cup, behind only the 260/6 posted against Kenya in 2007.

Oman’s reply, however, faltered from the outset. They lost three wickets in the powerplay while managing just 36 runs in the first six overs, signalling early difficulties in chasing the hefty target. By the end of their innings, Oman had reached 120 for 9 in 20 overs, leaving them 105 runs short and effectively ending their hopes of progressing from Group B.

Mohammed Nadim stood out for Oman, scoring an unbeaten 53 off 56 balls. At 43 years and 161 days old, Nadim became the oldest player to register a fifty in an ICC tournament, surpassing the previous record held by Flavian Aponso of the Netherlands in the 1996 World Cup. Nadim’s innings, although valiant, was insufficient to stave off defeat. Wasim Ali added 27, and ‘Mr. Extra’ 15, while a fourth-wicket partnership of 42 from 36 balls offered a fleeting glimmer of hope for Oman’s fans.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers ensured the victory was never in doubt. Mahesh Tikshana and Dushmantha Chameera claimed two wickets each, with Vellalage chipping in with one. Their disciplined bowling restricted Oman’s scoring and capitalised on early breakthroughs.

Summary of Match Performance:

Team Score/ Wickets Top Scorers (Runs) Key Bowlers (Overs/Wickets)
Sri Lanka 225/5 (20 overs) Kusal Mendis 61, Rathnayake 60, Shanaka 50 Ramanandi 2/41, Sufian 1/60
Oman 120/9 (20 overs) Nadim 53*, Wasim 27 Tikshana 2/11, Chameera 2/19, Vellalage 1/17

With this victory, Sri Lanka tops Group B with 4 points from two matches, solidifying their position on the path to the Super Eight stage. Australia and Zimbabwe follow, while Ireland and Oman remain without points. Pawan Rathnayake was named player of the match for his outstanding innings that laid the foundation for Sri Lanka’s massive total.

Sri Lanka’s seamless combination of aggressive batting and disciplined bowling highlighted their supremacy, leaving little doubt about their status as tournament favourites in the group.
