Sri Lanka has suffered a significant setback in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign as star all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga has been ruled out of the tournament due to a hamstring injury. The 27-year-old sustained the injury during Sri Lanka’s opening match against Ireland in Colombo, where he had already made a mark by taking three crucial wickets.
Medical examinations have confirmed that Hasaranga will be unavailable for the remainder of the World Cup, leaving the team management with the task of filling a vital role in the squad. Known for his leg-spin and explosive lower-order batting, Hasaranga’s absence is a major blow to the team’s balance and versatility.
To replace him, the Sri Lankan selectors have drafted in Dushan Hemanta, a 30-year-old leg-spinner, following approval from the tournament’s Technical Committee. Hemanta, who made his international debut against Zimbabwe last year, has so far played three T20 Internationals. While primarily a bowler, he has demonstrated the ability to contribute with the bat, particularly in the lower order.
Hemanta now faces a golden opportunity to establish himself on the global stage. With Sri Lanka’s next match against Oman scheduled for 12 February, all eyes will be on him as he steps into one of the most high-pressure roles of his career. Analysts note that his performance could significantly influence Sri Lanka’s campaign, especially in the spin-friendly conditions of the UAE.
| Player Out | Injury Type | Player In | Age | Role | T20I Experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wanindu Hasaranga | Hamstring Injury | Dushan Hemanta | 30 | Leg-spinner & Lower-order bat | 3 matches |
The Sri Lankan team management has emphasised that Hemanta has been training extensively with the squad and is expected to integrate seamlessly. Head coach Rangana Herath stated, “Losing Wanindu is unfortunate, but Dushan has shown promise and is prepared to contribute at both ends. We believe he can step up in this crucial tournament.”
The team’s strategy may see Hemanta taking on greater responsibility in the middle overs with the ball and providing stability with the bat in the lower order. Cricket analysts suggest that this adjustment could be pivotal in Sri Lanka’s pursuit of a strong finish in a highly competitive T20 World Cup.
As the tournament progresses, fans and selectors alike will be watching closely to see whether Hemanta can rise to the occasion and fill the void left by one of Sri Lanka’s premier all-rounders. His performance in the upcoming match against Oman could well define his international career trajectory.
