The status of Pakistan’s participation in the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup remains uncertain, with additional speculation that India could potentially boycott their match against Pakistan. Despite these uncertainties, Sri Lanka—the co-host of the tournament—is taking comprehensive security measures to ensure the high-profile encounter proceeds smoothly.
According to the official schedule, India and Pakistan are set to face each other on 15 February in Colombo, in what promises to be one of the tournament’s most anticipated fixtures. To guarantee maximum security, Sri Lankan authorities will deploy elite armed forces specifically for this match.
Officials have emphasised that while security will be robust across all World Cup venues, matches involving India and Pakistan will receive special attention. Speaking to AFP, Sri Lanka’s Sports Minister, Sunil Kumara Gamage, stated:
“Ensuring a safe and well-organised World Cup is our highest priority, and special attention will be given to India–Pakistan fixtures.”
Sri Lankan police and security officials revealed that elite commando units—typically reserved for protecting foreign heads of state—will be assigned to all participating teams. One officer, speaking anonymously to AFP, explained:
“From the moment teams leave the airport until they return for departure, they will remain under armed protection.”
The political tension between India and Pakistan has led to Pakistan refusing to play their scheduled matches on Indian soil. Consequently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has relocated these fixtures to neutral venues in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh also requested to avoid travelling to India due to security concerns, but the ICC rejected the request and instead included Scotland in the tournament schedule. Whether Pakistan will withdraw in solidarity with Bangladesh remains unclear, though PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi indicated that a decision could be announced tomorrow or by Monday, 26 January.
The situation has prompted Sri Lanka to leave nothing to chance, ensuring the tournament’s marquee match receives the same level of preparedness as any event hosting a visiting head of state.
| Match Type | Security Deployment | Special Notes |
|---|---|---|
| India vs Pakistan (Colombo) | Elite armed forces & commando units | Highest-priority match; continuous armed protection |
| Other World Cup Matches | Elite armed forces | Standard tournament security |
| Team Transit (Airport–Venue) | Armed protection | Coverage from arrival to departure |
With uncertainty surrounding team participation and political tensions influencing the schedule, Sri Lanka’s proactive measures aim to reassure players, fans, and organisers that the T20 World Cup will be conducted in a secure and professional environment.
