Sri Lanka’s cricketing icon Kumar Sangakkara is mourning the loss of his father, senior lawyer Keshema Sangakkara, who passed away recently, family sources have confirmed to local news outlet NewsWire.
Keshema Sangakkara, a respected attorney based in Kandy, was widely recognised in the legal fraternity and held in high esteem within the local community. Beyond his professional accomplishments, he was known for his unwavering guidance and discipline in the personal lives of his children.
According to NewsWire, Keshema is survived by his wife Kumari, their four children—Thushari, Vemindra, Saranga, and Kumar Sangakkara—as well as sons- and daughters-in-law and grandchildren. His family has requested privacy during this period of mourning.
The body will be laid at the family residence in Kandy to allow relatives and close acquaintances to pay their respects. The funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, 4 March, at 6:00 pm local time.
Keshema Sangakkara played a pivotal role in shaping Kumar’s cricketing journey. Not only was he Kumar’s first coach, but he was also among his most candid critics. Kumar has often recounted instances where his father meticulously analysed his technique and strategies, pointing out flaws even after remarkable achievements, including a memorable double century.
Kumar Sangakkara retired from international cricket in 2015 as the third-highest run-scorer in the history of the game, amassing 28,016 runs, and formally retired from all forms of cricket in 2020. Following his playing career, he has remained deeply involved in the sport, assuming roles as coach, cricket director, analyst, and commentator. He is currently part of the commentary team for the ongoing T20 World Cup.
The Sangakkara family has requested that condolences be extended respectfully, keeping in mind their desire for private mourning during this profoundly difficult time.
