The Government of Bangladesh has formally assumed responsibility for the welfare of the bereaved family of Dipu Chandra Das, following his brutal killing earlier this month. Education Adviser Professor C R Abrar made the announcement during a visit to the family home, reaffirming the state’s commitment to justice, social harmony, and the protection of all citizens irrespective of religious or ethnic identity.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Professor Abrar said the decision was taken after consultation with the Chief Adviser. “The state will take full responsibility for the care and well-being of Dipu Das’ wife, child, and elderly parents. I was instructed to speak directly with the family to understand their immediate and long-term needs. Local administration will remain in close contact with them to ensure sustained support,” he said.
At around 4:30 pm, the Education Adviser visited Mokamiakanda village in Tarakanda Upazila, Mymensingh, where he met Dipu Das’ grieving family. During the visit, Dipu’s father, Ravi Chandra Das, described the family’s helpless condition and demanded exemplary punishment for those responsible for his son’s killing.
Professor Abrar strongly condemned the incident, stating that Bangladesh’s long-standing tradition of communal coexistence must not be undermined. “Our society is built on mutual respect and peaceful cohabitation. Freedom of expression is protected, but no individual has the right to enforce personal beliefs through violence. Bangladesh is governed by the rule of law, and only the state has the authority to investigate allegations and determine culpability,” he said.
Describing the killing as a “heinous and indefensible crime”, the adviser added that the government had already arrested 12 suspects in connection with the incident. “The investigation is ongoing, and all those found responsible will be brought to justice through due legal process. The law will be applied with its full force against such acts of brutality,” he assured.
Professor Abrar further stressed that the government remains steadfast in safeguarding the dignity and security of every citizen. He warned that certain groups were attempting to incite unrest and communal division, urging both authorities and citizens to remain vigilant.
