Strict Security Measures Enforced at Jahangirnagar University for JAKSU Elections

The Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union (JAKSU) and hall council elections are taking place today, with stringent security arrangements put in place across the campus. Security forces, including members of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), have been deployed at entrances to prevent any untoward incidents.

On Thursday, 11 September, a visit to the main entrances of the university revealed law enforcement personnel positioned at every gate, performing strict checks. Major entry points — including the main gate, Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall gate, Prantik gate, and Bish Mile gate — were all under heavy security with the presence of police, RAB, and Ansar forces.

No outsider is being allowed entry without valid authorisation. Identity verification is being conducted to ensure only students, teachers, officers, employees, or officially approved individuals may enter. Vehicles are permitted only if they carry university stickers or are designated for emergency services.

A police officer stationed at a gate explained: “Today is the JAKSU election. Maximum security has been ensured inside the campus. We have been strictly instructed not to allow entry without proper identification.”

Despite tight checks at the gates, the atmosphere inside remains normal, with students moving about freely. The main administrative and security focus is currently centred on the polling booths.

Professor A K M Rashidul Alam, Member Secretary of the JAKSU Election Commission, stated: “Security across the campus has been reinforced. The Commission will do everything necessary to ensure the elections are conducted fairly and smoothly.”

To maintain peace during the election, authorities have deployed:

Force Deployed Number/Units
Police 1,500 officers
Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 7 platoons
Ansar 5 platoons

Both inside and outside the campus, law enforcement remain on alert to prevent any disruptive or violent incidents.

To secure the elections, several restrictions have been imposed:

  • Gate Closures: Except for Mir Mosharraf Hossain Hall gate and Prantik gate, all other gates remain shut from 6 pm, 10 September to 12 pm, 12 September.
  • Shops and Markets:
    • All floating stalls and shops near Tarzan Point, old transport stand, Murad Square near the new Arts Building, Prantik gate north market, and those adjacent to the main gate are closed on 11 September (6 am – 6 pm).
    • Only canteens and shops inside residential halls are allowed to remain open with instructions to stock sufficient food supplies.
  • Vehicle Restrictions:
    • From 6 pm, 10 September to 12 pm, 12 September, motorcycles are banned, except for emergency services (security, water, electricity, gas, internet).
    • Only vehicles with round university stickers or Election Commission stickers may enter.
    • Staff buses must enter through Prantik gate.

This year’s JAKSU elections have attracted a total of 178 candidates vying for 25 posts.
