A disturbing incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a stone was hurled at a shuttle train carrying students to Chittagong University, leaving one female student injured. The victim, whose nose and upper lip were cut by the impact, received immediate medical attention and was subsequently transferred to a hospital for further treatment.
The incident took place around 11:30 a.m. near the Cantonment Railway Station area in Chittagong city. The injured student has been identified as Emu Moni Jyoti, a resident of the Patenga area and a student of the Department of International Relations at Chittagong University.
According to university sources, Emu boarded the shuttle train from Sholoshohor Railway Station, en route to the university campus. As the train approached the Cantonment area, a stone thrown from outside struck her, causing a deep cut from the lower part of her nose to her upper lip.
Fellow passengers quickly came to her aid, attempting to control the bleeding before she was taken to the Chittagong University Medical Centre. Given the severity of the injury, doctors referred her to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for further treatment.
Tawhidul Islam, a postgraduate student of the same department and a companion of Emu, told the press:
"She received four stitches above her upper lip. After initial treatment, she was sent home."
Dr Mohammad Abu Tayeb, acting medical officer at the university’s health centre, confirmed:
"She was brought in around 12:30 p.m. The cut extended from below her nose to her upper lip. Considering the depth of the wound, we referred her to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for specialised care."
University authorities expressed concern over the incident. Professor Md. Bazlur Rahman, Assistant Proctor, stated:
"I have been briefed about the matter. This is an unfortunate and regrettable incident. The university will take all necessary steps to ensure the safety of our students."
The occurrence has raised renewed concerns regarding student safety on the shuttle trains, which serve as the primary mode of transport for hundreds of students commuting daily between the city and the campus. Authorities have assured increased vigilance and safety measures to prevent any similar incidents in the future.
