Police in Barisal have arrested Monir Sardar, 35, the convener of the Uzairpur Upazila unit of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), following allegations that he assaulted an employee of a dredging business with a hammer while demanding extortion money. The arrest took place on Saturday night in the Dhamura area of the upazila. In the wake of the incident, the JCD central committee has expelled Monir Sardar from his organisational post for violating party discipline.
Monir Sardar, son of the late Hamed Sardar of South Dhamura village, was apprehended after a case was filed by Monirul Islam, a dredging contractor, on Friday night. Uzairpur Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Rakibul Islam confirmed the arrest, noting that Monir Sardar is the principal accused in the complaint.
According to the police report, Monirul Islam conducts contract-based sand-filling operations in the Sholak union. On 4 January, Monir Sardar, along with a group of seven to eight individuals reportedly carrying crude weapons, approached the dredging site and demanded a sum of BDT 200,000. The contractor paid BDT 100,000 in three instalments under duress.
The extortion attempt escalated last Friday, when Monir Sardar visited Monirul Islam’s property at South Dhamura’s Rari Bari. Upon refusal to pay the remaining amount, Sardar allegedly attacked the dredger’s mechanic, Abu Bakkar Howlader, with a hammer, leaving him seriously injured. Local residents intervened and rushed the injured man to the nearby Agailjhara Upazila Health Complex for treatment.
A police case was filed on Friday, naming Monir Sardar, one of his associates, and eight unidentified individuals as accused. The arrest followed shortly after.

Following the incident, a press release issued by JCD central office secretary Jahangir Alam stated that Sardar had been removed from his position for “clear violations of organisational discipline.” Tarek Sujan, the senior joint convener, has been appointed acting convener to ensure continuity and dynamism within the local unit. The decision was approved by JCD president Rakibul Islam and general secretary Nasir Uddin.
Authorities have stressed that the investigation is ongoing and warned against further intimidation or violence, while the party has emphasised maintaining organisational integrity and law-abiding conduct among its members.
