Student Leader Expelled for Chanting ‘Joy Bangla’ at Awami League March

Mujahid Bin Firoz, the coordinator of the Debhata Upazila branch of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Satkhira, has been permanently expelled from the organisation after taking part in a march organised by the Awami League and chanting slogans such as “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”

On the night of 23 July (Wednesday), the expulsion order was issued by Md Arafat Hossain, the coordinator of the Satkhira District branch of the movement, on grounds of gross violation of organisational discipline.

Timeline of Events

Date Event Description
16 July (Night) A group of helmeted and masked individuals marched in the Chinadanga area of Sakhipur Union, Debhata.
They chanted “Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu.”
Same night A blurry video of the march was posted from Mujahid Bin Firoz’s personal Facebook account.
In the video post, he issued a stern warning to “teach the Awami League a lesson.”
23 July Identification of participants based on attire, despite their attempts to conceal identity.
23 July (Night) Mujahid Bin Firoz was permanently expelled by the district committee following an internal investigation.

Highlights

  • Although the participants tried to hide their identities by wearing helmets and masks, their distinctive clothing and mannerisms made it easy for local residents and party members to identify them.
  • The video shared by Mujahid on Facebook ironically led to his exposure, as he was recognised along with his close associates—all affiliated with the Satkhira District Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
  • The district committee, upon verification, deemed this participation and public slogan-chanting in favour of a political party as a serious breach of organisational ethics, prompting immediate and permanent disciplinary action.

Official Statement

The Satkhira district coordinator Md Arafat Hossain remarked:

“Such behaviour is completely inconsistent with the principles and neutrality of our movement. Mujahid Bin Firoz’s actions have violated the trust of the organisation, and his permanent expulsion is a necessary step to maintain the integrity of our cause.”

This incident has sparked debate in local political circles, with many questioning whether student activism is being influenced or manipulated for political purposes, contrary to its original mission of fighting discrimination.
