At least five people were killed in a suspected suicide bombing inside a mosque in Maiduguri, the capital of Nigeria’s Borno State, during the Maghrib (evening) prayer on Wednesday. According to a report by Reuters on Thursday, the attack also left at least 35 others injured.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident, which comes amid heightened security concerns in Nigeria’s northeast, a region long plagued by militant violence.
For more than 15 years, Boko Haram and its splinter group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have targeted civilians, places of worship, and marketplaces in northeastern Nigeria, according to Reuters.
The explosion occurred around 6:00 p.m. local time at the Al-Adum Mosque, where worshippers had gathered for evening prayers. Witnesses described scenes of panic and chaos as people fled the site. The injured were promptly transported to Maiduguri University Teaching Hospital and the State Specialist Hospital for urgent medical care.
Local community leader Masta Dalori said, “No one knows exactly what happened. The bomb went off during prayers. May Allah guide us through this, but the details of how it occurred are unclear to everyone.”
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum condemned the attack, describing it as “extremely deplorable, barbaric, and inhumane.” In a statement, he called for increased vigilance in religious institutions and public gatherings. He also extended condolences to the families of the victims and offered prayers for the injured, emphasising that an assault on a mosque during worship constitutes a profound violation of its sanctity.
Police confirmed the casualty figures and stated that bomb disposal units had cordoned off the area while investigations continue. Residents were urged to remain calm yet vigilant.
This attack echoes a similar tragedy in August when gunmen attacked a mosque and nearby residences in Katsina State, killing at least 50 people.
