In a significant move within the administrative hierarchy of Bangladesh’s capital, Suraiya Akhtar Jahan has been appointed as the new Administrator of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). The appointment was officially confirmed via a notification issued by the Local Government Division on Monday, 9 February 2026.
Ms Jahan, who currently serves as an Additional Secretary within the Local Government Division, will take over the mantle from the outgoing administrator, Mohammad Ejaz. Mr Ejaz had been appointed on 12 February 2025 for a one-year tenure. With his term nearing its conclusion, the government opted for a fresh appointment rather than an extension, marking a seamless transition in the governance of one of the nation’s most critical urban bodies.
The appointment has been made under the statutory framework of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024, specifically invoking Section 25(A), Sub-section (1). According to the official gazette:
Executive Authority: Ms Jahan is vested with all the powers and responsibilities typically held by the Mayor of the DNCC.
Dual Responsibility: She will perform these duties alongside her existing role as Additional Secretary.
Financial Terms: In line with civil service regulations for additional responsibilities, she will be entitled only to a standard "responsibility allowance." She will not receive the full salary or ancillary financial perks typically associated with the mayoral office.

The Dhaka North City Corporation oversees a vast jurisdiction including key commercial hubs and residential zones. The role of the Administrator is pivotal in ensuring that essential services—ranging from waste management and public health to infrastructure maintenance—continue without interruption during the absence of an elected mayoral body.
Ms Jahan’s extensive experience within the Local Government Division is expected to provide the DNCC with steady, bureaucratic expertise. Her immediate priorities are likely to involve the management of the city’s monsoon preparedness and the ongoing digitisation of civic services. As an "Additional Charge" role, the focus remains on administrative continuity and fiscal discipline until the next electoral cycle or further government directives are issued.
