A suspected accused in a murder case has died while in the custody of the Detective Branch (DB) police in Sirajganj. Police say he passed away due to breathing difficulties, while doctors noted injuries on different parts of his body.
On Friday (21 November) at around 3:30 pm, Shahadat Hossain Mukul (45) died under treatment at the 250-bed General Hospital in Sirajganj. He was the son of Khalil Hossain from Kalia Haripur village in Sirajganj Sadar Upazila.
Dr Hemadri Shekhar Saha of the hospital’s emergency department said a team of police in plain clothes admitted Shahadat around 3:30 pm. Injuries were visible on his hands and feet. When asked about the injuries, police described them as the result of public assault. Shortly after, Shahadat’s heart stopped, and he was pronounced dead. His body remains in the hospital morgue.
Additional Police Superintendent (Crime) Mahbubur Rahman stated that on 12 November, the body of auto-rickshaw driver Aminul Islam was recovered from under the Choukidah bridge on the Bogura-Pabna highway. His auto-rickshaw had been seized by assailants who fled the scene. Shahadat was a suspected accused in this case. After being detained by the DB police for questioning, he suddenly fell ill due to breathing difficulties and later died under hospital care. A probe committee has been formed and instructed to submit a report within 14 days. His body has been handed over to family members.
OC Ekramul Hossain of Ullapara Police Station confirmed that the victim’s father filed a case against unknown suspects, which is now being investigated by Sirajganj DB police.
Shahadat’s elder brother, Jahurul Islam, said, “Police took my younger brother in good health on Thursday night. He died in custody. We demand justice for this incident.”
