Bangladesh’s women’s national football team has finalised its 26-member squad for the upcoming 21st AFC Women’s Asian Cup, set to be held across five venues in Australia from 1 to 21 March. The squad features a notable inclusion: 20-year-old forward Anika Rania Siddiqui, who plays professionally in Sweden. Anika’s selection marks another milestone in the history of Bangladeshi women’s football, following in the footsteps of Matsushima Sumaiya, born in Japan, who was the first overseas-born player to represent the country.
Anika developed her footballing skills at Brommapojkarna, a Swedish club, representing their Under-19 side before making her senior debut last month in the Swedish Cup. With her European football experience, she aims to bring new tactical awareness and technical quality to Bangladesh’s national team.
In addition to Anika, the squad introduces two other debutants: Alpi Akter and Souravi Afrin, both earning their first call-ups. Returning to the team are experienced campaigners Irin Khatun and Souravi Akand, whose inclusion strengthens the midfield and attacking options. Afeeda Khandakar will captain the team, bringing leadership and stability to the backline.
Bangladesh has been drawn in a competitive group alongside China, nine-time Asian Cup champions; North Korea, three-time winners and currently ranked 9th in Asia; and Uzbekistan, who have participated five times but never progressed beyond the group stage. The group fixtures are as follows:
| Date | Opponent | Venue | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 March | China | TBD | Opening match; current champions |
| 6 March | North Korea | TBD | Asia’s 9th ranked team |
| 9 March | Uzbekistan | TBD | Group stage finale |
China remains the most successful nation in the tournament’s history, having contested 14 editions since 1986 and secured the trophy nine times. North Korea has participated 10 times since 1989, lifting the title in 2001, 2003, and 2008. Uzbekistan’s previous appearances have ended at the group stage.
The 12-team tournament is divided into three groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed sides, will advance to the quarter-finals. The eight quarter-finalists will also secure qualification pathways for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, adding an extra layer of significance to each match.
