A tragic sequence of events in Phulpur upazila of Mymensingh district has led to the death of a seventh-grade schoolgirl, following allegations that she was subjected to sexual assault and subsequently took her own life by ingesting poison.
According to police and local sources, the incident occurred in Baroshunui village under Baitkandi Union on Monday (30 March). The accused, identified as Rubel Mia, a local resident and father of two, is currently absconding. Law enforcement agencies have launched multiple operations to locate and apprehend him, though he remains at large.
Family members of the victim have filed a murder case with Phulpur Police Station, alleging that the death was the direct consequence of the assault and the psychological trauma that followed. They have also expressed concern that influential individuals in the area may be attempting to suppress or dilute the seriousness of the incident.
Local accounts indicate that the schoolgirl was allegedly targeted while she was away from home. She was reportedly threatened and assaulted by the accused, after which she returned home and informed her parents about the incident. She also confided in her grandmother, expressing deep distress and reportedly saying, “I no longer want to live this life.”
Despite immediate efforts by her family to console her and assurances that legal action would be taken, the situation escalated tragically. On the night of 29 March (Sunday), the girl consumed pesticide at her home in an apparent suicide attempt. She was quickly taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for emergency treatment. However, she succumbed to poisoning early the following morning on Monday (30 March) while undergoing treatment.

Officer-in-Charge of Phulpur Police Station, Rashedul Hasan, confirmed that efforts are underway to arrest the accused. He stated that police teams, alongside other law enforcement units, are conducting coordinated raids in various locations.
Authorities have assured that the case is being treated with urgency and seriousness. Meanwhile, the victim’s family continues to demand swift justice, insisting that the case should not be obstructed or influenced by external pressure.
The incident has caused deep concern within the local community, highlighting ongoing fears about the safety and protection of minors, as well as the urgent need for effective enforcement of justice in sensitive criminal cases.
