Teenage Girl Killed Over 170 Taka Dispute

A deeply disturbing incident has shocked residents of Jhalakathi’s Kathalia upazila, where a teenage girl was allegedly beaten to death by her uncle following a trivial dispute over just 170 taka. The incident has sparked outrage and renewed debate about domestic violence, intolerance, and the alarming ease with which minor disagreements can escalate into fatal violence.

The tragedy occurred on Tuesday afternoon, 30 December, in the village of Aorabunia under Kathalia upazila. However, the matter only came to public attention the following day, as family members and locals began speaking out. The victim, Lamia Akter, aged 14, was a Class 10 student at Uttar Charail Hashemia Dakhil Madrasa. She was also the stepdaughter of Faruk Khan, the elder brother of the accused.

According to police, relatives, and local residents, the incident began when Zakir Hossain Khan, Lamia’s uncle, claimed that 170 taka had gone missing from his pocket. Enraged by the loss, he allegedly entered into a heated argument with Lamia’s mother, Lily Begum. What started as a verbal dispute soon turned violent, with Zakir reportedly assaulting Lily Begum.

Witnessing her mother being attacked, Lamia rushed forward in an attempt to protect her. At that point, the accused allegedly struck Lamia repeatedly with a crowbar (locally known as a shabol), inflicting severe injuries. Both mother and daughter were left critically wounded.

Family members immediately rushed them to Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (ShBMCH), commonly known as Shebachim. Despite emergency medical treatment, doctors declared Lamia dead later that night. Her mother, Lily Begum, remains hospitalised and is currently receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Following the incident, angry local residents apprehended Zakir Hossain Khan and handed him over to the police. Villagers have demanded exemplary punishment, stating that such brutality over a negligible sum of money reflects a dangerous erosion of social values and tolerance.

Kathalia Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Abu Naser Mohammad Raihan, confirmed the arrest. “The accused has been detained in connection with the incident. Once we receive a written complaint from the victim’s family, a formal case will be registered and appropriate legal action will be taken,” he said.

The killing of Lamia Akter has cast a pall of grief over the community. Teachers and classmates described her as a quiet, diligent student with dreams of continuing her education. Her death has not only devastated her family but also deeply affected the wider community, serving as a grim reminder of the urgent need to address violence within households and ensure the protection of women and children.
