Teenage Relative Allegedly Raped by Uncle

Barisal Metropolitan Detective Police have recently submitted a charge sheet in court against Sabuj Akon, the former vice-president of the Barisal District Chhatra Dal, following allegations that he raped his teenage niece, an SSC examinee. Preliminary investigations suggest the allegations are substantiated.

Sub-Inspector Shafiqul Islam, the GR officer of the court, confirmed: “We have received the formal complaint regarding the alleged sexual assault this week. The case will now proceed to trial in court.”

Background of the Accused

Sabuj Akon, who was expelled from his political organisation on 25 May last year following the filing of the rape case, resides in Rahmatpur, Babuganj Upazila, Barisal. He had previously served as vice-president of the district Chhatra Dal. Reports indicate that the area experienced widespread looting after the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, and the accused has been linked to these incidents.

Investigation Timeline

The case was initially investigated by Assistant Sub-Inspector Md. Delowar Hossain of Barisal Metropolitan Police, Counia division, and later by Detective Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Gazi Md. Ahidul Islam Ahid.

The alleged victim is the daughter of the accused’s wife’s sister and had passed her SSC examinations last year. According to the complaint, while Sabuj’s wife was pregnant, he reportedly brought the girl into their home under the guise of care. He allegedly began harassing her in multiple ways.

On 21 August 2024, in a rented house in Barisal’s Swaroad area, Sabuj allegedly sexually assaulted the girl multiple times while no one else was present. He later threatened both the victim and her mother to ensure they did not disclose the incident. The victim’s mother filed a formal complaint six months later, on 26 May last year.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Detective Police Assistant Sub-Inspector Gazi Md. Ahidul Islam Ahid stated that the accused has been charged under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000 (amended 2003). The case is now officially before the court for trial.

Sabuj Akon has claimed he was unaware of the filing of the charge sheet against him. He remains out on bail.
