Teenage Worker Died in Compressor Blast

A teenage worker has died following a powerful explosion at a tyre inflation shop in the remote hill sub-district of Thanchi in Bandarban. The incident occurred at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Saturday evening at a small roadside workshop near the central bus station, sending shockwaves through the local community.

The victim, 16-year-old Abdul Qader, had travelled from Kaliash Union in Satkania, Chattogram, in search of work. He was employed at a tyre inflation and repair shop owned by Nurul Alam. According to local residents, the shop owner was not present at the time of the accident. Witnesses reported hearing a deafening blast before rushing to the scene, where they found the teenager lying severely injured nearly one hundred yards away from the workshop—an indication of the explosion’s extraordinary force.

Residents immediately transported him to the Thanchi Upazila Health Complex. However, attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival. Preliminary medical assessments suggest that he sustained multiple critical injuries, particularly to the head and chest, consistent with high-impact trauma caused by an explosive pressure release.

Police officials have launched an investigation into the cause of the blast. Officer-in-Charge Basudev Dash stated that initial findings indicate excessive internal pressure within the air compressor machine may have triggered the explosion. However, authorities have not ruled out potential mechanical faults, inadequate maintenance, or safety negligence. Legal procedures are currently underway.

High-pressure air compressors are commonly used in small roadside garages across rural Bangladesh. When poorly maintained or improperly operated, such machines can pose significant risks. Mechanical experts note that regular inspection of pressure gauges, safety valves, and storage tanks is essential to prevent catastrophic failure.
