A tragic fire in Bakhunda village of Gerda Union, Faridpur Sadar, has claimed the life of 16-year-old Tamim Mia, sparking intense local speculation over whether the incident was a tragic accident or a deliberate act. The fire, which occurred late on the night of Sunday, 29 March, has left the community in shock and prompted calls for a thorough investigation.
According to eyewitnesses and family members, Tamim had attended a family function at a relative’s house earlier in the evening. He returned home alone and went to sleep. In the early hours of the morning, a sudden blaze erupted inside his room. The family alleges that Tamim’s cries for help went unheard because the door was locked from the outside. Neighbours eventually forced the door open and rushed him to Faridpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead due to severe burns.
Tamim’s uncle, Shawkat, and mother, Hamida Begum, have claimed that the fire was a deliberate act linked to an ongoing land dispute. They stated that they had previously received threats and had lodged a general diary (GD) with the local police regarding these threats. The family is demanding a transparent investigation and justice for Tamim.
Senior Station Officer Nazrul Islam of the Faridpur Fire Service reported that three residential buildings were ablaze when the fire service units arrived. The fire destroyed three houses belonging to Rafiqul Mia and Shawkat Mia. He added that preliminary findings suggest the blaze may have been caused by an electrical short circuit, but a detailed investigation is ongoing to determine the exact cause.
Additional Police Superintendent (Sadar Circle) Azmir Hossain confirmed that Tamim’s body has been sent to the morgue of Faridpur Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. He assured that the police are taking the family’s allegations seriously and that a full investigation is underway.
